No matter what I read about Parkinson's I am still intrigued the most by the question of what causes this difficult disease? Why does it sometimes seem to run in families, but more often than not seem to just affect someone out of the blue?
I have read extensively about possible causes mostly because knowing the exact cause can only help with finding a way to stop the disease and/or cure it. My own personal belief is that there is often a genetic pre-disposition, but that there is also generally something environmental that triggers the cell death that occurs. Then again I am sure that there are cases with no genetic link at all and other cases where the disease developed solely based on genetics. I'd love to know how this continuum from genetics to environment works.
I know a lot about several of the genes that are implicated as links to Parkinson's, but so far there is no smoking gun genetically. I also know that pesticides and heavy metals are often sited as environmental causes. The latest potential cause is that the heavy metals that often exist in wine can lead to Parkinson's (as well as some cancers). Just a few years ago the biggest "healthy thing" to do was to have 1 glass of red wine a day to protect your heart. So it seems that wine might protect your heart, but hurt you in other ways.
I do not believe we know at this time whether or not most of the sources implicated truly cause disease or protect us against disease. I am hoping that in due time these things will become more apparent. For now I am planning to live my life well and enjoy every moment. I don't plan to be overly worried about pesticides, heavy metals in wine or my genetics.

My fifty-seven year old father has Parkinson's Disease. He was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson's Disease almost six years ago now (he was fifty-one then, but his doctors think he may have already been in the early stages of the disease during his mid-to-late thirties). At the time he was diagnosed, I was about to graduate from high school, completely naive & oblivious to what Parkinson's Disease even was. I can honestly say I was wholly unaware of the seriousness of the disease or the future struggles he and my family would face in the coming years as a result of his diagnosis.
But as my dad's Parkinson's disease has quickly progressed over the past six years, I have come to know the disease inside and out. That being said, I do believe there is a link between environmental factors, such as pesticides, to the development of Parkinson's Disease. My dad himself thinks that his Parkinson's may have developed as a result of working on farms as a summer job back when he was a teenager. Part of his job was spraying pesticides on crops, which therefore directly exposed him to their possible harmful effects.
I also believe there to be genetic predisposals in some individuals to Parkinson's Disease (myself included in this group). And when such genetic predisposals are combined with harmful environmental factors linked to Parkinson's Disease, I think the combination increases the odds of an individual developing the disease. However, this is my own personal opinon as I am clearly not a doctor, scientist, or expert on the subject. I am just a girl with a dad who has Parkinson's Disease, trying to put the puzzle pieces of this mysterious & relentless disease together.
Sometimes I wish there was an available genetic test I could take to determine if I myself might have Parkinson's Disease someday. Then I would know the truth & never have the question in the back of my mind. But on the other hand, what good would come from knowing this at the age of twenty-four, when no cure for Parkinson's Disease has been found yet?? As a young, active, & adventurous young lady, receiving bad news from such a test might just crush my spirit at this point in my life & keep me from enjoying and living in the moment.
After all, I have come to know that in life, anything can happen at any moment. None of us are even promised tomorrow. So why waste time worrying about tomorrow when today is all any of us truly have??? :)

I am a 28 year old that was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease over a year ago, and my father also has the disease as well. He was diagnosed with PD when he was 51, and his grandfather also had the disease as well. Even with these extreme genetic connections, our neurologists are still hesitant to assume that we were born with the genetic disposition of having the disease. We just needed something the trigger the loss of dopamine cells. I was a college baseball player, and had a baseball lined off my right temple when I was 18. Coincidentally, my tremors showed up on the right side of my body, FIRST. After trips to see many neurologists and parkinson's specialists, none of them have been able to make a direct link to either genetics or environmental factors. While they all agree both have played some part in me developing the disease, there is no 100$ answer. I enjoy reading your positive outlook and blogs.
